The Internet

The Internet is a global network of computers that allow individuals in government, in business, in school and at home to share information. The computers that communicate over the Internet fall into two categories: servers and clients. A server offers a service of some kind to other computers on the network; a client requests a particular service from a server.

The most widely-used Internet service is the World Wide Web, often called simply the Web. The World Wide Web provides access to a wealth of information stored on Web pages. Web pages can be written in a number of different computer languages, e.g., Hypertext Markup Language (HTML Extensible Markup Language (XML), JAVA, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).

One of my favorites subjects is the history of computers, this subject isn't cover in our program but I'm posting one of my favorite videos that could make you understand how to internet was created.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY:
•Write five things you do using the Internet.

Browsing the Internet

A Website usually includes a number of related Web pages. From the Home page of any website, you can get to other web pages at the site by clicking on the hyperlink to that page, which is normally indicated either by underlined text, blue text, or by a picture (graphic) of some kind.

The illustration below shows several hyperlinks—for example, Budget Management, Defense, Economy, Education, Energy, etc.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY:
•Write down your favorite website and the service you obtain from it.

Searching the web and Internet Safety

One of the founding principles of the Internet was that information should be free and easily accessible to everyone. This is one of the reasons the Internet has become so popular and is so widely-used. As the World Wide Web becomes more and more a center of commercial enterprise, offering online banking, online shopping, etc., these and other security concerns are being addressed. As a result, the Internet is becoming an increasingly safer means of exchanging information and doing business. Nevertheless, you should follow certain security guidelines, as well as be aware of available security options, when using the Internet.

REFLECTION ACTIVITY:
•Write three safety measurements you should take when using the internet.
