What is Access?

Access is powerful, yet easy-to-use, database management program, designed for use on a personal computer. Its primary purpose is to provide an efficient system for storing large amounts of data -- a system in which any one piece of information can be quickly located.

Access includes many features for manipulating the information that is stored. Using the program, you can, for example:

· Sort and reorganize the information.

· Extract and work with subsets of the information.

· Design custom forms for entering and viewing the information.

· Produce sophisticated reports for presenting the information.

What is a Table Primary Key?

A primary key is a unique identifier for a database record. When a table is created, one of the fields is typically assigned as the primary key. While the primary key is often a number, it may also be a text field or other data type. For example, if a database contains definitions of computer terms, it would make sense that each term is only listed once in the database.

How Electronic Mail Works on Networks

Electronic mail (or “e-mail” as it is more commonly known today) works by routing text messages from one user to another over a client/server network. Internet e-mail requires that each e-mail user have a unique e-mail address that is used to route messages to and from that user. Because the Internet is a network of networks, the e-mail address must specify both the user name (or “mailbox") and the network (or “domain”).

There are numerous ways that e-mail can be accessed. Many people use stand-alone e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, or Eudora. Other people use free Internet based e-mail services such as Hotmail, Google mail (gmail), or Yahoo Mail in which the client appears on a Web page. People who subscribe to online services such as AOL use their e-mail readers. The most recent innovations include accessing e-mail using wireless devices such as PDAs and cell phones.
