What is Access?

Access is powerful, yet easy-to-use, database management program, designed for use on a personal computer.  Its primary purpose is to provide an efficient system for storing large amounts of data -- a system in which any one piece of information can be quickly located.
Besides being merely a data storage and retrieval system, however, Access includes many features for manipulating the information that is stored.  Using the program, you can, for example:
• Sort and reorganize the information.
• Extract and work with subsets of the information.
• Design custom forms for entering and viewing the information.
• Produce sophisticated reports for presenting the information.

Queries

In a database you have tables, relationships, and data, so the next step is to build some queries. They'll help you answer important questions, and they'll make it easier to create forms and reports. Specifically, you'll create select queries. They're components that retrieve and process your data and display the results in a datasheet. For example, if you want to know who to call when a computer needs repair, you create a query that extracts the relevant names and phone numbers.
