Functions
Excel has some tools to perform text, statistical and logical mathematical operations called: Functions
They always start with an “=“ symbol in excel
With Functions, mathematical operations can be calculated faster in the spreadsheet.
Reflection Activity
• Mention 3 types of Functions that you can find on the Formula tab.
Power Function
The Excel Power function returns the result of a number raised to a power.
Example:
The number 2 raised to the "second power" or "squared" would be written 2² = 2x2 = 4.
Likewise, 2 raised to the third power, or "cubed," would be 2³ = 2x2x2 = 8
In excel, the POWER function would be:
=POWER(2,3)
Reflection Activity
• In this example: 3²
What number should be input on the “Number” and what number should be input on the “Power” on the Excel POWER Function?
Product Function
The Excel Product function provides a quick way to multiply numbers, especially when they are several numbers.
You can insert PRODUCT function in Excel to multiply numbers:
1. Click on the Formulas Menu and on the Math & Trig Icon.
2. Select “PRODUCT” from the list
3. Input the CELL position where you have the numbers that you need to multiply.
Reflection Activity
• How many numbers is the maximum amount to multiply using the PRODUCT function?
